IPWA Key Welfare Indicators Reference Guide
The IPWA Key Welfare Indicators Reference Guide has reached its final stage and is now open for public comment. Please see the link to review the documents and find instructions for submitting comments here: https://poultrywelfare.org/KWI_Reference_Guide
IPWA members, including veterinarians, technical advisors, growers, breeders, retail/foodservice companies, associations, training organizations, and academics, have spent thousands of hours over the past two years compiling these reference guides for broilers, turkeys, and layers to measure outcomes-based key welfare indicators (KWIs).
The guide is a comprehensive, independent resource created to educate on how, why, and when to measure KWIs and use the data to improve welfare. This work will lead to better welfare outcomes for the birds in our care, help to increase trust and transparency, and offer a method to collect data to help defend against misinformation.
IPWA plans to release the final copies of the guide after reviewing and considering public comments. A portion of the program at the 2022 Poultry Sustainability & Welfare Summit will be devoted to increasing understanding of the guide and gathering feedback on the types of training and materials that will help companies implement key welfare indicators going forward.
