After graduating from Leningrad University in 1953, Irina Galpern joined the Research Institute of Farm Animal Genetics and Breeding (VNIIRGZH), where she worked throughout her entire career, rising from graduate student to Head of the Department of Genetics, Breeding, and Conservation of Genetic Resources of Poultry.
Irina Galpern was a talented research scientist engaged in the search for new biological and genetic methods and their active application in practical poultry breeding. She developed fundamentally new methods for increasing the genetic potential of economically important traits in egg and meat chickens under various intensive maintenance technologies.
In 1984, I.L. Galpern was awarded the Prize of the Council of Ministers of the USSR for her work on developing and implementing methods for creating domestic layer and broiler crosses and for organizing hybrid poultry production in the country. Since 1975, she personally conducted and methodically guided a series of studies on the theoretical foundations for the long-term preservation of the gene pool of numerous rare and industrial chicken strains and the rational use of this gene pool for creating new crosses. For this work, she was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology in 1995.
The list of scientific works and inventions by I.L. Galpern includes more than 250 printed papers. She was the author of 64 copyright certificates and patents for inventions, with 57 of them granted for breeding achievements. According to the genetic programs developed by her, lines of numerous domestic layer and broiler crosses and strains were created.
Professor I.L. Galpern devoted significant effort and attention to training scientific personnel. Under her supervision, five doctoral and 39 PhD dissertations were successfully defended.
I.L. Galpern was one of the oldest and most active members of the Soviet and Russian branches of WPSA. She participated in World Congresses of WPSA in 1966 in Kiev, in 1974 in New Orleans (USA), and in 1978 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). She was well-known and highly appreciated by scientists and poultry specialists in many foreign countries.
Irina L. Galpern was distinguished by her hard work, perseverance in achieving her goals, integrity, and her sensitive attitude toward colleagues, always being responsive and willing to help.
Colleagues and students will forever cherish the memory of Professor Irina L. Galpern.
