Paul Siegel

USA

Paul Siegel was raised on a family farm in Connecticut. He received his BS in Poultry Science from the University of Connecticut and an MS and PhD in poultry breeding and genetics, respectively, from Kansas State University.

In January 1957 he joined the faculty at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, where today he is a member of the Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences and holds the title, University Distinguished Professor Emeritus. His research and teaching interests are in poultry genetics. He, his colleagues, and graduate students have published extensively on the effects of selection on growth, reproduction, behaviour, and immunocompetence of chickens. A former President of the Poultry Science Association, Animal Behaviour Society, Virginia Academy of Science, and the American Institute of Biological Sciences, he served 10 years as Senior Vice-President of The World’s Poultry Science Association.

Nissan T. Rand

Israel

Nissan Rand was born in 1930 in Kosice, Czechoslovakia. He migrated with his family to Palestine in 1935. In 1950 Dr. Rand moved to the USA where he received the BS degree with distinction in Food Science at Cornell University in 1954.

In 1957 he received the Degree of PhD in Poultry Nutrition and Food Technology. He went to work in industry in June 1957 in the USA. In 1960 Dr. Rand returned to Israel where he worked as Director of Nutrition for the Dawe-Abic Pharmaceutical Company. In 1966 he became Chief Scientist of Milouot Food Industries. He was the Chief Nutritionist of Miloubar Central Feed Mill and Director of Research and Development of Poultry and Nutrition Products. Dr. Rand served as a member of the Israeli National Research Council and introduced in Israel the concept of quality control for feed. He has taught courses in poultry science at the University of Teheran and has served as poultry advisor and “trouble shooter” in many countries. As a member and then Chairman of the European Working Group (No. 2) on Nutrition, Dr. Rand has devoted a great deal of his time to the work of the WPSA. Furthermore, in both Israel and Europe he is a frequent and popular chairman and/or speaker at scientific conferences. In addition, he is known worldwide for his hobby of competitive bridge and has won the title of World Bridge Champion in Albuquerque in 1994 and in Lille, France in 1998.

Rose-Marie Wegner

Germany

Rose-Marie Wegner was born in 1924 in East Prussia and studied Agricultural Science at the Universities of Halle and Bonn. She started her scientific career with a dissertation submitted at the University of Bonn in 1952 on crossbreeding and characteristic breeds in England.

She was appointed Professor for “Small Animal Breeding and Husbandry” at Bonn University in 1966. Between the years 1976 and 1989 Professor Wegner headed the Federal Research Centre for Small Animal Breeding in Celle, where her research activities were focused on breeding, feeding and husbandry of poultry and resulted in the publication of more than 200 scientific papers. During her times in Bonn and Celle her research activities were concentrated on the further development of housing systems for poultry, especially those aspects pertaining to animal welfare. Professor Wegner gave high priority to the international exchange of ideas. Her activities in the WPSA have increased from decade to decade. From 1972 to 1996 she served the organisation as Secretary of the German Branch and from 1984 to 1996 she was Secretary of the World body. Professor Wegner actively cooperated with and strongly influenced the Working Groups “Welfare” and “Nutrition” of the European Federation. In 1994 she was presented with the MacDougall Medal by the WPSA and in 1996 she received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for her voluntary work for the WPSA and UNICEF.

William J. Stadelman

USA

William Stadelman was born August 8, 1917 in Orchards, Washington, USA. He graduated from Washington State College in 1940 and was awarded a PhD degree in Agricultural and Biological Chemistry in 1948 for a thesis on turkey nutrition.

He was first an Assistant and then Associate Professor of Poultry Science at Washington State University from 1948 to 1955 and an Associate and Full Professor at Purdue University from 1958 to 1983. On retirement, he was awarded Professor Emeritus rank. Since 1983 he has served as a consultant to several poultry-related companies. Recognition was extended to him by elections as President of the Poultry Science Association (1977), President of the Refrigerated and Frozen Food Division of the Institute of Food Technologists and Outstanding Teacher Award of the Poultry Science Association. In 1999 he was awarded a Certificate of Distinction by Purdue University Agricultural Alumni Association. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals dealing with poultry and egg product development, and quality preservation and determination. He has contributed chapters to seven books and has been co-author of two books relating to poultry and eggs. He has served as major professor for 34 MS and 35 PhD degree students.

Roy D. Crawford

Canada

oy Crawford was born on 6 June 1933 in Vancouver, Canada. He obtained his BSA at the University of Saskatchewan, his MS degree from Cornell University and his PhD in poultry genetics from the University of Massachusetts.

He served as a Research Officer with Agriculture Canada from 1957 to 1964 when he moved to the University of Saskatchewan as an Assistant Professor of Poultry Science, becoming full Professor in 1974. Dr. Crawford has received many prestigious teaching awards throughout his career. His research programme was concerned with the study of single gene genetics, the major contribution being the discovery of a mutation that causes seizures in chickens. This internationally recognised research programme provided an important animal model of the grand mal form of epilepsy in humans. He has published over 60 scientific papers and written many chapters for technical books. A major academic achievement was the editing and production of Poultry Breeding and Genetics. Dr. Crawford was an active member of the FAO/UNEP Expert Panel on Genetic Resources Conservation. He was a Founder and Past Chairman of Rare Breeds International. He was a Fellow of the Agricultural Institute of Canada and a Fellow of the Poultry Science Association and received the Saskatchewan Poultry Award of Merit.
