WPSA Scholarship Awards

WPSA Scholarship Awards winners 1996

To mark the success of the 1992 World’s Poultry Congress in Amsterdam, the Netherlands Branch of the World’s Poultry Science Association established a series of special scholarship awards. These awards, worth Dfl 125,000 (about US$14,000), are normally made in three categories representing the WPSA’s main areas of activity: Research, Education, and Industry/Organization.

The Research Award is given to a scientist based on up to five publications in referenced journals, recognizing outstanding contributions in their field. Education awards may be for contributions such as books, other publications, instructional films, videos, or the development of training programs. The Industry/Organization Award is given to individuals or organizations making significant contributions to the poultry industry over the five-year period preceding a World’s Congress. Recipients or leaders of the group must have been WPSA members for at least two years prior to the award.

The WPSA Scholarship Awards Committee, chaired by Dr. Piet Simons, the President of the WPSA, announced the first group of winners for 1996 at the World’s Poultry Congress in New Delhi.

WPSA Paul B. Siegel Research Award

professor Yoshizane Maeda

The Research Award was given to Professor Yoshizane Maeda from the Faculty of Agriculture, Kagoshima University, Japan. Professor Maeda has specialized in Animal Genetics and Breeding throughout his career. His recent award from the Japanese Poultry Science Association recognized his work on “Genetic studies on protein metabolism of poultry and its application to improvement.” His research has provided valuable insights into muscle protein metabolism in poultry, potentially guiding selective breeding and understanding genetic variations in meat production. The WPSA Research Scholarship will support his continued studies in this important area.

WPSA Education Award

Poultry Research Group, Glasgow University

The Education Award was given to the Poultry Research Group from the Veterinary School at Glasgow University, Scotland, led by Professor Sally Solomon. Over the last 15 years, this group has gained an international reputation for its work on egg shell formation. Their research has significantly advanced understanding of shell formation and helped reduce losses from cracked eggs, a costly problem for the industry. The group’s findings are shared with the industry through Egg Quality Workshops, which include both lectures and practical sessions. These workshops facilitate communication between researchers and industry professionals. The WPSA Education Award was given in recognition of the valuable impact this program has on improving the efficiency of egg production.

Industry / Organization Award

Poultry Industry Centre for Research and Education

The Industry Award was presented to the Poultry Industry Centre for Research and Education in Ontario, Canada. The Centre’s mission is to enable the poultry industry to direct the resources necessary to shape its future. The Centre plays three key roles: (i) raising funds from the industry to support research and education, (ii) acting as an extension service to translate research findings into practical knowledge for the industry, and (iii) promoting lifelong learning within the Canadian poultry sector. The Centre has raised $158,000, which has attracted further funding from corporations and governments. Professor John Summers from the University of Guelph, the Centre’s Technical Advisor, accepted the award on behalf of the Poultry Industry Centre.
