Human exposure to heavy metals, especially lead, can occur through a variety of different pathways. These include the air, drinking water, food, contaminated soil, deteriorating paint, and dust. Many sources of heavy metals have been eliminated in the United States. For example, the manufacturer of lead-based paint was banned in 1978 and in 1996 the EPA took final steps to phase out leaded gasoline. However, the historical environmental legacy from these sources of heavy metals remains and can pose a health risk. Research has shown that heavy metals, especially lead, can be transferred from contaminated soil to eggs. Dr. Jacquie Jacob from the University of Kentucky will address the question of whether or not heavy metals are a concern for backyard flocks.

The link for the webinar will be available one week before the scheduled date.
