ShimadaDr Shimada obtained his B.S. from Gifu University, M.S. from Rutgers University as a Fulbright scholarship holder and PhD from Nagoya University. He joined the faculty of Aichi Medical School as an assistant professor in 1974, the faculty of agricultural sciences of Nagoya University as an assistant professor in 1976, an associate professor in 1979 and full professor in 1991.

He was named a Director of Avian Bioresearch Center (2007-2008) and after his retirement he served as a designated professor at Nagoya University for a year. In 2009, he was invited as full professor by Seoul National University, Korea on special project of World Class University and continues his teaching and research. He has taught numerous courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including animal physiology, poultry reproduction, genetics and avian biotechnology.
Dr Shimada has published approximately 300 publications, of which more than 100 are refereed scientific journals in the field of poultry reproduction, which were influenced by his early career working at Goto Hatchery Incorporation, the leading hatchery company in Japan. He has also made remarkable contribution to the training of nine postdoctoral fellow researchers, 12 PhD and 20 Masters students. Many of them are from China, Indonesia, Korea, India, Poland and Canada. These graduates and researchers are engaged with teaching and research at the universities, government, poultry industries as well as pharmaceutical companies in the world.
He has served as an Editor-in-Chief of Journal Poultry Science, gaining impact factor for this Journal. He is an active member of the WPSA as a secretary of Japan Branch of the WPSA and later the President of Japan Branch of the WPSA. At the same time he worked as Vice President of Asian Pacific Poultry Congress (APPC). He served for WPSA congress as a scientific programme committee and poultry industry-tour guide in 1988 and for APPC symposium as General Secretary and Treasurer in 1998 in Nagoya. Recently, he organized the Korea-Japan Joint Symposium on Avian Biology at Seoul National University.
For his research achievements he was given the research award from the Japan Poultry Science Association (1989) and for his overall activities he was given the award of Association of Japanese Agricultural Scientific Societies (2009). He is currently serving as an associate editor of Poultry Science.
