wegnerRose-Marie Wegner was born in 1924 in East Prussia and studied Agricultural Science at the Universities of Halle and Bonn. She started her scientific career with a dissertation submitted at the University of Bonn in 1952 on crossbreeding and characteristic breeds in England.

She was appointed Professor for “Small Animal Breeding and Husbandry” at Bonn University in 1966. Between the years 1976 and 1989 Professor Wegner headed the Federal Research Centre for Small Animal Breeding in Celle, where her research activities were focused on breeding, feeding and husbandry of poultry and resulted in the publication of more than 200 scientific papers. During her times in Bonn and Celle her research activities were concentrated on the further development of housing systems for poultry, especially those aspects pertaining to animal welfare. Professor Wegner gave high priority to the international exchange of ideas. Her activities in the WPSA have increased from decade to decade. From 1972 to 1996 she served the organisation as Secretary of the German Branch and from 1984 to 1996 she was Secretary of the World body. Professor Wegner actively cooperated with and strongly influenced the Working Groups "Welfare" and "Nutrition" of the European Federation. In 1994 she was presented with the MacDougall Medal by the WPSA and in 1996 she received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for her voluntary work for the WPSA and UNICEF.
